About The Pioneer Group

The Pioneer Group is a privately held publishing, printing and communications firm headquartered in Big Rapids, Michigan, serving and with offices throughout West Central Michigan.

The company boasts a proud history dating back to 1862 when the first four-page weekly newspaper was distributed in Big Rapids.

More than 145 years later, the company has grown into a progressive, regional leader in its industry.

The corporate office in Big Rapids is guided by the fourth generation of the Batdorff family, President and Chief Executive Officer John A. Batdorff II. John’s father, Jack, serves as Chairman of the Board.

The business features two daily newspapers, The Pioneer in Big Rapids and the Manistee News Advocate, as well as numerous weekly newspapers, shopping guides and niche publications.

The company also operates a yellow page division, Phone Directory Services, which produces and supplies local phone directories to more than 300,000 people each year.

The Pioneer Group kicked-off the millennium with the purchase of a new high speed, high quality, Heidelberg printing press – housed in a newly constructed printing and distribution facility in Big Rapids Township. The new press and ancillary equipment in this state-of-the-art facility serves all company publications as well as numerous commercial clients.

The corporate business model has been a simple but successful one: strong community journalism, excellent customer service with numerous advertising opportunities for area businesses.

The Pioneer Group also prides itself in being a leader in civic affairs, supporting countless causes in the areas it serves.
